Are All CrossFit Gyms The Same?

No! All CrossFit gyms are individually owned and operated, we are not a franchise. Our affiliation to CrossFit is based on our passion for quality training and programming and love of functional movements done at high intensity. What does this mean to you? You should check out the facilities, the coaches, and the classes. Some gyms may omit Olympic weightlifting, gymnastics and other modalities. Some programs are based on body weight only. The experience and skill level of coaches and trainers also vary. Are you just paying for someone to tell you what to do (definitely NOT the same as someone showing you what and how; and getting you to understand why)? Is there real coaching going on? Are you learning new skills and moving forward? So again, we are all similar, but can be vastly different. Choose what fits you best and your goals. No matter what, I am glad you found CrossFit. Done correctly, it is the BEST strength and conditioning programming around!

What are the costs?

The membership fees associated with the classes are dependent on the number of classes you would like to come per week. We offer a 3 Day a Week Package, and an Unlimited Package. You can also purchase a 10 Punch Punch Card. Please refer to our Pricing Section for specific Cost.

Do you have showers?

Yes! We have four. Two in the mens locker room and two in the womens.

I’m a student, what type of verification do you need for the student rate?

A student ID would be sufficient.

Do you have to pay a monthly membership in addition to the classes or is the membership fee for just the classes?

Fees are just for the classes. All classes ares group instructor led. We do offer a few open gym hours but membership is required to take advantage of these. Membership rates are for CrossFit classes only.

I’ve heard that the Crossfit classes are only 20 minutes or a 1/2 hour. Is that true for your studio as well?

All classes are one hour in length. Classes are comprised of a high paced warm up consisting of mobility, flexibility and lots of sweat. The warm up is followed with some form of skill or strength set for 20 minutes and lastly a metabolic conditioning workout which typically lasts 10-30 minutes depending on the energy system we are focusing our efforts in that particular day.

How long after you start Crossfit (how many classes) until most people start seeing changes/results?

Immediately, once you start CrossFit you will never work out any other way.

Isn’t it expensive to join CrossFit?

CrossFit Weddington is a coaching/training facility. You will get a certified CrossFit trainer coaching every time you step into our doors. At the local Globo big box gym you may only pay $50 a month. You have to understand that that is an access fee. That small fee just gives you access to their gym. Inquire about personal training there and you’ll see the value of our Coaching Membership. In this area, 12-15 personal training seasons per month can cost you over $700 per month at your local gym plus the cost of membership. We are tiny fraction of that price — and you will get better results and have a better time. We’re actually really affordable for the service and results you receive. For more pricing information please click here for our Membership Info.

Can you get hurt doing CrossFit?

Just like most activities, if you don’t do it correctly you can hurt yourself. That’s why we have so much coaching and assistance for our members. We like to work with our crossfitters in 3 stages. First: Mechanics (learning how to do the movement with correct technique), Second: Consistency (the ability to do the movements over and over again with safe and relatively efficient technique), Third: Intensity (the speed at which you do the movements). One does not come before the other. Every single one of our instructors is certified to do just that.

Why group classes? Why can’t I workout when I want?

Group workouts get better results. Our group class format encourages a healthy, competitive spirit to motivate you to perform at your personal best. You’ll push yourself harder and have more fun in a group. Guaranteed!

Do I need to get into shape before I start CrossFit?

This is common misconception. The answer is no. CrossFit is designed to get those out of shape into shape and those in shape to get into better shape. The most elite athlete can come into the gym and find a workout challenging. You can never be “fit” enough. That’s why we are here and offer scaling options for each individual so that you can thrive during each workout on a personal level even if you are just a beginner.

I’ve heard that CrossFit is really hard, is that true?

CrossFit is as hard as you make it. We encourage people to push to the limits of their own tolerances but only you can make the most out of your own workouts with the amount of work you put into them.

Will I get too big and bulky?

Different crossfitters will have different goals. Our coaches will always keep that in mind as they train and coach you. In order for people to get bigger, especially women there are two things that you would have to make a concerted effort to do. One: Pick up very heavy weight on a frequent basis. Two: eat an extremely high caloric diet of the right foods. These are two things that CrossFit Does Not focus on if your goals are to gain lean muscle and lose fat. We work with you on a program to create a slimmer crossfitter. The reason why CrossFit frequently focuses on lifting weights is because muscle is much more efficient at burning calories than fat. Doing this properly is what is missing from many peoples workouts. If your goals are to increase weight and lean muscle mass, CrossFit can help you to focus on those goals also.

Why don’t you use CrossFit.com programming all of the time?

CrossFit.com provides excellent programming. At CrossFit Weddington, we take the same approach with constantly varied movements and workouts. We choose to offer workouts that may be more easily scaled in a group setting and address some of the needs/desires of our community. You are guaranteed to have one day per week to be a heavy loading day to help address strength demands. Our philosophy is the same as HQ (constantly varied, functional movement at high intensity). We just try to meet some more specific needs of our community.

I have to admit, I just follow your blog and then do the workouts, is that ok?

You could just follow our blog, but you would not get the quality of teaching from our certified trainers. Most people are not taught how to move correctly and don’t know how to teach themselves. You are automatically making yourself more susceptible to injury and leveling off in your gains by trying to do this on your own. It is also infinitely more fun when you are encouraged and held accountable by a group of your peers. Plus you will not have someone cheering you on in your basement or local gym, like you will have at CrossFit Weddington.
